Lazy, Hazy, Crazy

Well, I wish I could say that, during this recent little bloggy break, I'd been off ending world hunger or even doing productive work, like Topsy-Techie. But the truth is, Ben and I have been watching Battlestar Galactica, whose final season came out on DVD last Tuesday, and even when we weren't watching it, we were analyzing recent developments or endlessly predicting what was going to happen next. It's been difficult to remember that we have children to care for, jobs to get to, and vegetables to put up for winter, what with our obsession about this amazing show. Fortunately, we have watched the whole thing now and can get back to real life!

Even with all our watching of Battlestar, other things have been going on recently too. First, each boy spent a week being totally spoiled by their Grandma, going to favorite museums, eating dessert every night, and staying up late. Isn't that neat? (Thanks, Grandma!) It was kind of cool to have the other one at home with us all by himself, too, it gave us some rare one-on-one time. During Luke's visit to Camp Grandma (as we called it), Owen and I did little-boy stuff, like going to the zoo:

And during Owen's visit to Camp Grandma, Luke and I did bigger-boy - and more sedentary - things together, like reading:

Notice the tea-mug on the chair; I guess I've passed on my love for the combination of books and tea.

It was so nice to do things with each of them that we might not get to do with both of them.

Also, summer means birthdays in our house - first, Owen turned FIVE years old this year! How is it possible that my baby was born five years ago already?

At our favorite thrift shop, I found a Wilton kit for making super-hero birthday cakes, a boon in a year where Owen can't get enough super-hero play. Luke's obsession with dinosaurs endures, even into his ninth year:

Also, Ben got rolling (so to speak) on the chicken tractor:

So now our girls have a way to get out and see the world - our little corner of it, anyway.

Now, if you can imagine doing all these things in the real world, but never quite leaving the Battlestar Galactica universe, either, you will have my mindset over these last few weeks. It is such a great show, but I have to say: it's also nice to resume normal life again.

My husband and I can relate!! We LOVE Battlestar Galactica! What kind of fans are we though...we didn't realize the final season was already out. BUT I now know what our weekend is going to look like!

You are officially making my next b-day cake, lady!!! Wow!!! I have had SO many people tell me to try Battlestar, and I have so far stubbornly refused. You might have pushed me over the edge. Yikes!!

Dana - when you've watched the whole thing, email me at whywehsatyahoodotcom, and tell me what you think!

Topsy - my favorite auntie was a professional cake decorator, and when I got married she gave me a whole box of 'tricks of the trade,' so I am a lucky lady. That said, these cakes weren't too hard, and it's always well-worth the trouble; birthday cake has kind of been elevated to a be of utmost importance around here. One of our favorite traditions is to have birthday cake for breakfast in the days after our birthdays, even - it's how I keep my slim figure :-)

So I would love to hear what you all thought of the final episode. I wonder if you can do that without ruining it for those who haven't seen it yet. I know what you mean by it consuming you. It's like your mind because all jumbled up with what is real :) Personally, we were disappointed in the ending but not enough that we were appalled... well, maybe a little! Hopefully there will be a movie in the future. We miss it so much.

Karen,
You are too funny. My best friend and her husband got me hooked. I'm on Season 1 disc 3 so no one spoil the end of the show with comments. You have to go to my blog and scroll all the way down to the bottom and take the BG quiz to see who you are. I'm Boomer! I have a few seasons to go so I won't be back to reality for a while. Enjoy the last of summer!

Fab cakes! I am also a BG fan but I'm a little behind--just watched the Eye of Jupiter episode and am dying to find out who are the final five!

Nice to know there are more sci-fi homeschooling families out there! I knew there was a reason why I liked you guys so much. :) We happen to be Dr. Who fans, and Peter has started collecting old sci-fi magazines.

Melissa, Rana, and Susan - Oh, you guys will have to email me at whywehsatyahoodotcom too, and then we can talk about the series!! It is so good...

Jena - my hubbie is a big Dr. Who fan, I must confess that it still scares the life out of me, even as an adult! I am just a chicken, I guess.

Love your cakes! Especially the dinosaur cake.

My husband was a big fan of Battlestar Galactica, I kind of listened from the next room. :o) I'm more into the lighter fare, like Eureka and The Middleman (which was canceled after one season, unfortunately).

Grandmas are awesome homeschooler helpers, aren't they?

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

OMG! DH & I love BSG. We haven't let dd watch it, too many mature themes/scenes. She is however a BIG Stargate fan. All she wanted for Chirstmas one year was the complete box set of SG DVD's (grandpa came through!) So just about every day at lunch we watch one episode. We are in season 6 now I think.

We all are also big Dr. Who and Torchwood fans.

Good to see other homeschool geeks out there! Come down to Atlanta Labor Day week end and join us at Dragon*Con. There will be a good BSG panel with lots of the cast. There will also be a good showing of Stargate cast members. Very cool to meet these folks in real life! So say we all!

Cristina - thanks for the cake compliments! I've never heard of Eureka or the Middleman (or is it all one show?), our lighter fare tends to be something like Arrested Development or Agatha Christie mysteries on PBS. I know, we are peculiar people :-)

Khakismum - you're right about the mature themes, our kids don't watch BG and I can't believe that they're rated for 14 and up! I'd LOVE to get down there for that conference, it'd be really exciting to see the cast in person - not in our budget this year, though.

If you scroll down to the bottom of my blog, you will see that I took the 'which BG character are you' quiz, and I got Helo! Who I adore, so I am very happy... and, yes, a total geek :-)
